overview
As United Rentals' suite of digital tools evolved, its flagship worksite management platform Total Control was long overdue for a redesign. Despite playing a critical role in managing the largest fleet of construction rental equipment in the world, the platform had never been touched by experience design. The result was a clunky, unintuitive interface with a seriously steep learning curve.
Our team set out to completely transform the tool's user experience. My focus was on redesigning the live, interactive equipment map — a key feature that helps teams quickly visualize equipment distribution, monitor utilization, and make faster, more informed logistical decisions on their construction jobsites.
the problem: fragmented map experiences
Before the redesign, Total Control offered four separate map experiences, each with its own layout, features, and functionality. This lack of consistency made it difficult for users to develop a reliable mental model of how maps worked across the platform, leading to confusion, inefficiencies, and a poor user experience.
the goal: consolidation
improving usability of the existing map tool, improving UX and updating the UI to feel contemporary with the new and improved Total Control.
providing the ability to view key data and alerts at a glance and summarizing large amounts of equipment in a legible visual format.
ensuring users can effectively access and use the map from different parts of Total Control and in different dimensions, designing for responsiveness and scalability
the features
equipment pins + clusters
jobsite pins
street and satellite view
equipment status layers
location history for GPS-tracked assets
filtering and toggle on/off behavior

the ongoing process
Over more than a year, I collaborated closely with product owners, designers, and developers to define the MVP, then to refine behaviors and interactions. Despite shifting requirements, scope changes, and limited development resources, we successful launched the new map as a central feature of the reimagined Total Control in 2025. This ambitious effort enabled cross-pollination across the platform, from integrating miniature maps for every piece of equipment to building a dashboard providing an entire fleet overview at a glance. The result is a more cohesive, intelligent, and user-centered experience, setting the stage for future innovations to come.
